Crime in Rural Areas

The Irish Farmers Association have released the results of a survey of over 500 of their members on the subject of crime in rural areas.

Just under 40% said they felt less safe in their area than they did this time last year. Almost 60% felt the last 12 months had not changed their sense of security.Communications by the Garda, especially in keeping in touch with victims and reporting back with updates on progress, needs to be improved – IFA President, John Bryan

IFA president John Bryan pointed out these results do not tally with recent comments by politicians that crime levels were dropping. He wondered whether crimes are going unreported.

The survey found more than 38 per cent had installed outdoor security lighting while only one in five had installed burglar alarms. The same number had erected security gates. That leaves a staggering percentage of farms devoid of any protection or deterrents.
