The Irish Farmers Association have released the results of a survey of over 500 of their members on the subject of crime in rural areas.
Just under 40% said they felt less safe in their area than they did this time last year. IFA president John Bryan pointed out these results do not tally with recent comments by politicians that crime levels were dropping. He wondered whether crimes are going unreported.
The survey found more than 38 per cent had installed outdoor security lighting while only one in five had installed burglar alarms. The same number had erected security gates. That leaves a staggering percentage of farms devoid of any protection or deterrents.
